    The six findings

    Six patterns every SEO team should adjust for

    Finding 1 — AI Overviews now dominate informational SERPs

    Across 4.2M tracked SERPs, 47.3% of informational queries returned an AI Overview in July 2026. Six months earlier that figure was 18.1%. Growth is fastest in health, finance, and B2B software — three verticals where Google previously prioritized authoritative organic results.

    Finding 2 — Position 1 CTR drops 34% when an AI Overview appears

    For 148K queries where we had both pre- and post-AI Overview CTR data (via connected GSC accounts, anonymized), median position 1 CTR fell from 27.8% to 18.3% when an AI Overview appeared above it. Position 2–5 saw smaller drops (12–19%); positions 6–10 were roughly flat.

    Finding 3 — AI Overview SERPs are 2.4× more volatile

    Median day-over-day position change on AI-Overview SERPs was 1.9 positions, vs. 0.8 on non-AI-Overview SERPs. This isn't noise — Google appears to be actively testing which sources to cite, which cascades into organic position changes on the same query.

    Finding 4 — Top 5 organic ranks earn most AI Overview citations

    62% of URLs cited inside AI Overviews already ranked in the top 5 organic results on the same query. 24% ranked 6–20. Only 14% came from outside the top 20 — meaning traditional ranking still overwhelmingly determines AI citation.

    Finding 5 — AI Overviews churn every ~11 days

    The median AI Overview answer set was replaced or reshuffled every 11.2 days. Brands cited today are frequently uncited two weeks later — passive monitoring is not enough; teams need active weekly tracking of AI-Overview citation status per query.

    Finding 6 — Transactional SERPs are the fastest-growing AI-Overview segment

    AI Overviews on transactional queries ("buy", "pricing", "best X for Y") grew from 1.2% in Q4 2025 to 8.7% in Q2 2026 — a 7× jump. Bottom-of-funnel SEO strategies that ignore AI Overviews will underperform through 2026.

    Methodology

    How we ran the numbers

    • — Dataset: 4,231,802 Google SERPs tracked by LemRank between April 15 and July 15, 2026.
    • — Countries: 62 (weighted toward US, UK, DE, FR, ES, IT, CA, AU, NL, IN, BR).
    • — Devices: desktop and mobile pulled separately, then merged by weighted-average impressions.
    • — AI Overview detection: DOM-level parse of the answer block, cited-source list, and expand-collapse state.
    • — CTR impact: 148,247 queries with both pre- and post-AI-Overview positions and impressions from opted-in GSC connections. All data anonymized to query + position + CTR triples; no domain-level identifiers analyzed.
    • — Volatility: absolute day-over-day change in organic position, median across the study window.
