    Keyword Difficulty Checker

Compare a free structural estimate with a SERP-backed score when a cached or authenticated fresh check is available.

    Estimated difficulty
    Easy
    20

    Why this score

    • • Long-tail phrase (6 words) — much easier to rank.
    • • Commercial modifier detected — attracts paid competition and listicles.
    • • Niche modifier detected — narrows the SERP to specialised results.

    Recommendation

Realistic for new sites. Write a thorough, well-structured page with clear H2s and internal links.

Run a check to score this keyword against the domains currently ranking for it.

Structural estimates and available cached results do not require an account. Fresh SERP-backed checks require sign-up. To track keyword changes over time, use LemRank's keyword research module.

How this keyword difficulty score is calculated

When a cached or authenticated fresh Google top-10 result is available, this tool uses authority and referring-domain counts for the ranking domains. Difficulty is derived from the authority you would have to outrank — weighted mostly by the mean domain authority of the top 10, and adjusted by how heavily linked those pages actually are. A SERP of well-known domains with thin link profiles scores lower than one where every result is deeply linked.

If no scored SERP is available, the tool falls back to a transparent structural estimate based on phrase length, commercial modifiers and query format, and labels the result accordingly.

KD checker (free): what each score band means

"KD" is simply shorthand for keyword difficulty. Every KD checker maps the 0–100 score to a decision, and these are the bands this tool uses:

    • 0–14 Very easy — a focused page can rank within weeks, even on a new domain.
    • 15–29 Easy — realistic for low-authority sites with thorough content.
    • 30–54 Moderate — needs good content plus a few months of publishing in the same cluster.
    • 55–74 Hard — ambitious; a longer-tail variation is usually the faster route.
    • 75–100 Very hard — established-authority territory.

Use bulk mode to score a whole list at once: paste up to 200 keywords and the easiest ones are sorted to the top, so you can pick the terms worth a live SERP check.

    Keyword difficulty FAQ

    How is keyword difficulty calculated?
When a scored Google top-10 result is available, this checker uses authority and referring-domain counts to estimate difficulty. A cached result may be shown without an account; an uncached fresh check requires sign-up. Otherwise the tool labels its keyword-structure estimate.
Is the keyword difficulty checker free?
The structural estimate and available cached SERP scores can be viewed without signup. Sign up to request a fresh SERP-backed score when no scored cache entry exists.
What is a good keyword difficulty score?
Below 30 is realistic for a new or low-authority site. 30-55 needs solid content plus consistent publishing in the same topic cluster. Above 75 generally requires established domain authority.
Why does the score differ from other keyword difficulty tools?
Tools use different formulas and snapshots. This checker may show a cached SERP-backed score, a fresh score for signed-in users, or a clearly labelled structural estimate; check which source is shown before comparing scores.
    What is a KD checker?
A KD checker scores how competitive a search term may be from 0 to 100. This tool offers a free keyword-based estimate and, when available, a score derived from cached or authenticated fresh Google top-10 results.
Can I check keyword difficulty in bulk?
Yes. Switch to bulk mode, paste up to 200 keywords (one per line), and every phrase is scored instantly in your browser and sorted easiest first. Bulk scores use the structural model; run any single keyword through the live check for a SERP-backed score.

    In short

Keyword difficulty estimates how hard it may be to reach Google's first page for a term, on a 0–100 scale. A SERP-backed score uses authority and referring-domain counts from cached or authenticated fresh results. When no scored SERP is available, this tool labels its keyword-pattern estimate separately; two keywords with similar volume can face very different competitors.

    Worked example

    What the output looks like

    Input
    Keyword: "keyword golden ratio calculator"
    Output
Difficulty 12/100 — top 10 averages 21 referring domains; positions 6, 8 and 9 held by pages with fewer than 5 referring domains
    How to read it
This is a genuine opening. Three of the ten results have almost no link equity, so a single well-formatted page with a working calculator can realistically take a first-page slot without any link building.

    How it works

    1

Use a cached or fresh SERP-backed score

A cached Google top-10 result may be available without an account. Sign up to request a fresh result when there is no cache entry; otherwise the tool labels its keyword-based estimate.

    2

Authority of the incumbents sets the score

Difficulty is driven by the link profile of the pages ahead of you, not by search volume. A 3,000/mo term held by thin pages is easier than a 200/mo term held by Wikipedia and Ahrefs.

    3

Look for the gap, not the average

The useful signal is the weakest result in the top 10. One low-authority page at position 7 is a foothold, even when the average difficulty looks discouraging.

    What this tool does

    • 0–100 structural estimate, with a SERP-backed score when available
    • Authority and referring domains for every ranking page
    • Highlights the weakest position worth attacking
    • Free estimate without signup; fresh SERP checks require an account
