How to track AI Overview rankings over time

    Last reviewed 24 August 2026 · 6 steps

    The short answer

An AI Overview has no position, so track three signals per keyword instead: whether an Overview triggered at all, whether it cites your domain, and how far down the page the organic results now start. Sampled daily and trended, those three explain the increasingly common pattern of a stable position losing clicks.

    The method, step by step

    1. Record Overview presence per keyword, per day

AI Overview triggering is volatile: a keyword can show one for a fortnight and then stop. Presence is therefore a daily data point, not a fixed property of the keyword, and the change in presence is often the real story behind a traffic drop.

    2. Record whether it cites you

Citation is the outcome that matters. Being cited inside an Overview keeps you visible even when the organic block is pushed down; being absent while a competitor is cited is a loss no position number will show you.

    3. Track where the organic block starts

An Overview plus ads can push position 1 organic below the first screen. Logging what sits above the organic results turns "we are still number two" into the more honest "we are number two, below the fold".

    4. Compare clicks before and after triggering

Join your daily Overview presence data to Search Console clicks for the same query. The clearest evidence of impact is a query whose position held while its click-through rate halved the week an Overview appeared.

    5. Prioritise the queries where you lose the most

Rank affected queries by clicks lost, not by how many have Overviews. A handful of commercial queries usually accounts for most of the damage, and those are where restructuring a page to answer the question directly is worth the effort.

    6. Restructure for extraction, not for length

Pages that get cited answer the question in the first paragraph in plain language, back it with a table or a specific figure, and avoid burying the answer under an introduction. Adding words rarely helps; moving the answer to the top often does.

    Honest limits

What this method will not tell you

    • AI Overview presence is unstable and varies by location and account state, so a single day of data proves nothing about a keyword.
    • Google does not report AI Overview impressions or clicks separately in Search Console, so the impact has to be inferred from CTR change rather than measured directly.
    • Detecting that an Overview appeared is not the same as knowing what it said. Store the cited domains if you want to explain, rather than only count, the change.

    Questions

    Frequently asked

Can you rank inside an AI Overview?

There is no ranked position inside an Overview — sources are cited, not ordered by rank. The tractable goal is being one of the cited sources.

Does an AI Overview reduce clicks?

Frequently, yes, because it pushes organic results down and can answer the query outright. The way to know for your own site is to compare Search Console CTR for affected queries before and after the Overview started appearing.

Does Search Console show AI Overview data?

Not as a separate dimension. Impressions and clicks from Overview-bearing SERPs are folded into normal query data, which is why presence tracking has to be collected alongside it.
