How to track ChatGPT rankings over time
Last reviewed 24 August 2026 · 6 steps
The short answer
ChatGPT does not return a ranked list, so there is no position to track. The measurable equivalent is citation share: define a fixed set of buying-intent prompts, re-run them on a schedule, and record for each answer whether your brand is named and whether your URL is cited. Trended weekly against competitors, that share is the closest thing to a ChatGPT ranking.
The method, step by step
Accept that there is no position to measure
A ChatGPT answer is generated text with a handful of citations, not a ranked SERP. Any tool promising your "ChatGPT position" is inventing a number. What genuinely exists is whether you were mentioned and whether you were cited, per prompt, per run.
Build a fixed prompt set
Write 20–50 prompts a real buyer would type: "best rank tracker for agencies", "alternatives to [competitor]", "is [your brand] any good". Freeze the wording. If the prompts drift between runs, every change in your results is unattributable.
Re-run on a schedule and store the raw answer
Weekly is enough for most categories. Store the full answer text, the cited URLs and the model version, because answers vary between runs and between model releases. Without the raw text you cannot later prove what changed.
Score mention and citation separately
Being named in prose and being cited as a source are different outcomes with different fixes. Mention without citation usually means your brand is known but your pages are not the reference; citation without mention often means a listicle that includes you is doing the work instead of your own site.
Trend share of voice, not single runs
For each prompt count how often each brand appears across runs. If you appear in 22 of 100 prompt-runs and a competitor appears in 55, your share is 22%. That percentage over time is the metric to report — a single run is a coin flip.
Work on what actually gets cited
Cited pages tend to share three traits: an unambiguous answer in the first 100 words, a comparison or specification table, and clear entity markup. Pages built to persuade rather than to answer are rarely quoted, however well they rank in Google.
Honest limits
What this method will not tell you
- ChatGPT answers are non-deterministic. The same prompt can cite different sources across runs, so any single run is noise and only aggregates mean anything.
- Personalisation, memory and browsing state change results. Your own logged-in ChatGPT is the worst possible measurement instrument.
- There is no impression or click volume behind these answers, so citation share cannot be converted into traffic. It is a visibility measure, not a demand measure.
Questions
Frequently asked
Does ChatGPT have rankings?
No. It generates an answer and may cite a few sources, so there is no ordered list of results. The trackable equivalents are mention rate and citation share across a fixed prompt set.
How often should I re-run my prompt set?
Weekly suits most categories. Because answers vary run to run, consistency of schedule and prompt wording matters more than frequency.
Why does my ChatGPT visibility differ from my Google rankings?
They reward different page types. Google can rank a product page on brand and link signals; an assistant tends to quote whichever page states a checkable fact plainly, which is often a comparison table or a roundup rather than your homepage.
